The Ontario government is ending provincial funding for seven drug injection sites located in communities already served by Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hubs, part of a broader strategy to prioritize treatment, recovery, and public safety. With nearly $550 million invested to establish 28 HART Hubs across the province, these centers provide integrated mental health, addictions, and recovery-focused services, including supportive housing and pathways to long-term care.
A 90-day wind-down period has been initiated to allow clients to transition safely to HART Hub services, with the government coordinating closely with municipalities and community partners. This decision builds on recent legislation restricting injection sites near schools and child-care centers, and aligns with Ontario’s ongoing investments through initiatives such as the Roadmap to Wellness and Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, which together aim to strengthen community safety, improve access to mental health and addiction services, and help individuals break the cycle of addiction.
