The World Bank, the Government of India, and the Government of Uttar Pradesh have signed a $299.66 million agreement to support the state’s Clean Air Management Program, aimed at improving air quality while creating job opportunities for youth and women. The program targets key sectors such as transport, agriculture, and industry, and will install nearly 200 new air quality monitors, with data managed by the U.P. Pollution Control Board.
By leveraging almost $150 million in private investment, the initiative will promote electric buses and three-wheelers, cleaner industrial technologies, and emissions monitoring, boosting productivity and expanding employment opportunities. The program will also provide 3.9 million households with access to clean cooking, transition over 700 brick kilns to resource-efficient technology, and support farmers in adopting efficient fertilizer use to enhance crop productivity.
As part of the World Bank’s Regional Air Quality Management Program in the Indo-Gangetic Plains and Himalayan Foothills, the initiative combines environmental improvements with sustainable economic growth, ensuring long-term benefits for citizens and the wider region.
