Lebanon is experiencing severe humanitarian challenges due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, resulting in mass displacement, disrupted markets, and increasing food insecurity. The conflict has significantly impacted access to essential health care, with attacks on health workers, ambulances, and medical facilities. Many hospitals and primary care centres have been forced to close due to evacuation orders and the deteriorating security situation. The urgent need for shelter, food, clean water, and health care products is becoming more critical.
In response to the Lebanese Government’s request for assistance, Canada has announced over $37.7 million in funding to address the escalating humanitarian needs in Lebanon. The funding will support food, medical services, shelter, and clean water, and will be delivered through trusted humanitarian partners such as the UN, the Red Cross, and other NGOs. Canada is committed to ensuring that this aid reaches those who are most affected by the crisis.
Canada is also urging all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, calling for de-escalation and the immediate restoration of peace. The Canadian government supports the disarmament of Hezbollah, in alignment with Lebanon’s position, as a sustainable path to stabilizing the Israel-Lebanon border, restoring Lebanese authority, and enabling the safe return of displaced persons on both sides of the border.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, expressed Canada’s solidarity with Lebanon and emphasized the importance of the announced funding in addressing urgent humanitarian needs. Secretary of State for International Development, Randeep Sarai, echoed concerns about the escalating crisis and assured that Canada is acting swiftly to provide life-saving assistance. Additionally, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, reiterated Canada’s long-standing commitment to supporting Lebanon during its most challenging times. Fayçal El-Khoury, Member of Parliament for Laval-Les Îles, Quebec, also reaffirmed Canada’s ongoing support for Lebanon amidst these dire circumstances.
Canada continues to closely monitor the situation in Lebanon, working with humanitarian partners to respond to evolving needs and ensure that vital aid reaches those in need.
