The Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has partnered with the UNICEF Field Office in Kaduna to strengthen advocacy on immunisation, nutrition, personal hygiene, and child protection across the state. The collaboration was announced during a courtesy visit by NAWOJ executives to the UNICEF office, highlighting shared goals in promoting the welfare of women and children.
Gerida Birukila, Chief of the Kaduna UNICEF Field Office, praised journalists for their extensive reporting on issues affecting women and children and noted that the office oversees four states: Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Niger. She highlighted the urgent need for intensified advocacy in Kaduna, which currently has the highest number of zero-dose children—those who have not received any routine immunisation—within the zone.
UNICEF WASH specialist Theresa Pamma outlined key interventions in nutrition, menstrual hygiene, personal hygiene, and the eradication of open defecation. She emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns and media engagement in improving child and maternal health outcomes. Dr. Idris Baba also stressed practical strategies to enhance immunisation coverage, including sustained community sensitisation and the dissemination of accurate information, commending NAWOJ for its dedication to child-focused advocacy.
NAWOJ Chairperson Sahura Maidoki explained that the association sought collaboration with UNICEF because of their shared commitment to advancing the rights and welfare of women and children, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by out-of-school children. Head of Communications Hadiza Sani further highlighted areas for collaboration, including amplifying children’s voices, promoting responsible reporting on child-related issues, and supporting public education campaigns on immunisation and hygiene practices.
Both NAWOJ and UNICEF reaffirmed their commitment to a sustained partnership aimed at improving the health, safety, and overall well-being of women and children throughout Kaduna State.
