Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, has announced over €5 million in funding for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for 2026, including a €750,000 increase in core support. OHCHR is the leading UN body mandated to promote and protect all human rights globally, with a unique role in ensuring accountability and advocacy for the protection of vulnerable populations.
Minister Richmond highlighted that Ireland’s increased contribution is critical to maintaining OHCHR’s operational independence and strategic flexibility, enabling the organization to respond effectively to unforeseen human rights crises. He emphasized Ireland’s ongoing commitment to supporting those most marginalized and ensuring that human rights remain central to foreign policy and development cooperation, particularly through partnerships with civil society organizations and NGOs that advocate for the rights of vulnerable communities worldwide.
The funding will support key initiatives within OHCHR, including the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, the Human Rights Advisers Program, the Trust Fund that facilitates the participation of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Human Rights Council, and the Coordination Committee of Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. These investments aim to strengthen global human rights protection, advance inclusion in international human rights processes, and enhance OHCHR’s capacity to respond to emerging challenges.
