Samoa Launches One Health Pandemic Preparedness and Response Project

Dated: February 24, 2026

The Government of Samoa, in partnership with the World Bank, FAO, and WHO, officially launched the One Health Pandemic Preparedness and Response project, supported by a US$4.8 million grant from the Pandemic Fund. The initiative adopts a One Health approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, and aims to strengthen Samoa’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats, zoonoses, and climate-related health risks.

Led by the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Natural Resources and Environment, the project will enhance surveillance systems, upgrade laboratory infrastructure, integrate human-animal-environment data, and develop a skilled workforce ready to respond to emerging health threats.

The project also aligns with national policies on climate resilience, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention, reinforcing Samoa’s long-term health security.

Through multisectoral collaboration and partner support, including co-financing and technical guidance from global organizations, Samoa is building sustainable systems to protect public health and strengthen preparedness for future pandemics.
