Geneva – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, will visit Egypt from 8 to 17 February 2026 at the invitation of the Government. The visit aims to assess the enjoyment of the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation in the country.
During the visit, Arrojo-Agudo will examine key aspects of these rights, including availability, accessibility, affordability, quality and safety, and acceptability. He will also evaluate water governance, the effects of climate change on water resources, and the challenges faced by vulnerable communities in accessing safe water and sanitation services.
The Special Rapporteur will travel to several governorates and meet with government authorities, organizations, communities, UN entities, and other relevant stakeholders to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation on the ground.
A press conference will be held on 17 February 2026 at 12 pm local time at the Sofitel Downtown Cairo, with access limited to accredited journalists.
Following the visit, the Special Rapporteur will prepare a final report containing findings and recommendations, which will be presented to the Human Rights Council during its 63rd session.
