Vodacom Foundations have committed R6 million to support flood-relief efforts in Mozambique and South Africa following severe flooding that has displaced thousands of people and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with government agencies and humanitarian organisations and is part of Vodacom Group’s broader response to the crisis.
The funding will be directed towards immediate humanitarian assistance, community rebuilding programmes and recovery support for affected families. This financial commitment is in addition to Vodacom’s ongoing operational efforts to restore and maintain network connectivity in flood-affected areas, recognising the critical role of communication services during emergencies.
In Mozambique, widespread flooding since the start of the year has severely affected southern and central regions. More than 400,000 people have been displaced, with provinces such as Gaza, Maputo and parts of central Mozambique among the worst hit. Rapidly rising floodwaters forced many families to evacuate suddenly, often without time to secure essential belongings.
South Africa has also experienced significant impacts, particularly in Limpopo province, where flooding has led to loss of life and extensive damage to housing and infrastructure. Districts including Mopani, Vhembe and Sekhukhune have been especially affected, placing additional strain on local communities and emergency services.
Vodacom Group has emphasised that the relief funding complements its technical response on the ground. In Mozambique, Vodacom teams are working under difficult conditions to restore connectivity despite flooded roads, power outages and damaged infrastructure. The network is gradually recovering, supported by emergency response volunteers deployed to help ensure access to vital communications for affected communities.
