The Office of Public Works (OPW) and Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) have announced that the €12 million Castleconnell Flood Relief Scheme has progressed to the detailed design stage following planning permission approval from An Coimisiún Pleanála. Once completed, the project will provide flood protection for approximately 50 properties in Castleconnell, addressing a long-standing need for improved resilience against extreme weather events.
Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Minister Moran, highlighted that advancing to detailed design will enable OPW Direct Labour to begin construction in 2027, offering protection and peace of mind to residents in flood-prone areas. The scheme, designed by JBA Consulting & Egis Ireland Ltd in partnership with LCCC, includes a comprehensive range of measures such as flood walls and embankments along the River Shannon, demountable flood barriers, road-raising, culvert upgrades, and drainage improvements.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, welcomed the planning approval, emphasizing that it allows the project to move forward confidently and deliver long-term protection for the village. Similarly, Príomh Chomhairleoir Cllr Catherine Slattery noted that the scheme will reduce risks to homes, safeguard local jobs, and strengthen the resilience of Castleconnell’s community.
As the project advances to the landowner agreement and detailed design phase, LCCC, OPW, and the engineering consultants will work to meet all planning conditions to ensure timely delivery. Dr. Pat Daly, Director General of LCCC, affirmed the commitment to achieving the highest environmental and engineering standards while maintaining ongoing engagement with landowners and the Castleconnell community throughout the project’s development.
