Mexico faces a growing skills gap in advanced manufacturing and digital technologies, with 68% of employers struggling to find qualified talent. Sectors such as aerospace, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and electronics require sophisticated technical and digital skills, while traditional education systems are not keeping pace with rising demand in areas like cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.
To strengthen the country’s global competitiveness and leverage nearshoring under Plan México, developing specialized talent has become a strategic priority. The plan positions Mexico as a global manufacturing hub under the USMCA framework, highlighting the importance of aligning workforce skills with economic opportunities.
Aprendices Digitales México (ADM) was launched as a collaborative initiative between the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Cisco, Google Cloud, IBM, and CONALEP. The program integrates academic training, digital certifications, and work-based learning to meet the skills demands of priority sectors, boosting productivity, domestic value added, and international competitiveness.
ADM targets young people and adults aged 15 to 40, connecting technical and vocational education with sector-specific training and real workplace experience. Its three-pillar model includes a technical academic curriculum offered by CONALEP, integrated digital skills certifications from Cisco, Google Cloud, and IBM, and structured on-the-job training with partner companies in priority economic hubs.
The initiative also has regional ambitions, aiming to expand similar programs to Central America and the Dominican Republic through the América en el Centro platform. In its first phase, ADM partnered with Google Cloud to provide 10,000 digital training scholarships in El Salvador, demonstrating how collaboration between government, academia, and industry can create scalable, high-impact training solutions.
By developing specialized talent, Mexico and the region are laying the groundwork for a digital and manufacturing workforce capable of driving productivity, competitiveness, and innovation, ensuring that the region’s future is built on skills and opportunity.
