A $2 million Coordinated Emergency Support Package has been announced to assist graziers in Carpentaria, Cloncurry, Flinders, McKinlay, and Richmond Shires following record-breaking floods in the northern outback. The funding, provided by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), will cover costs such as jet fuel, helicopter hire, and the additional wages associated with aerial fodder distribution.
Since Christmas, intense rainfall has transformed the north-west interior into an inland sea, leaving many farmers unable to access fodder and other essential resources as paddocks remain flooded and major roads are cut. This targeted investment ensures that fodder can reach stranded cattle and sheep until flood levels recede, helping protect livestock, safeguard food security, and support farmers during this extremely challenging period.
The welfare of livestock is critical, particularly as primary producers work to mitigate the impacts of extreme flooding on their stock and land. Farmers in need of fodder support are urged to contact their local council immediately. Additionally, affected primary producers in Carpentaria, Cloncurry, Croydon, Flinders, McKinlay, and Richmond Shires can access low-interest disaster loans of up to $250,000 through QRIDA to assist with recovery efforts.
The Queensland and Australian Governments continue to work closely with communities impacted by the northern monsoon trough and remain ready to activate all necessary funding to support recovery and rebuilding in the region.
