The Mendip Hills Fund is now open for applications, offering grants of up to £2,000 to support local projects. Applications can be submitted between 2 January and 2 March, with all applications considered by the panel in March, regardless of submission date.
The fund supports community and voluntary group projects that aim to help local wildlife, engage the community in activities, improve social and economic initiatives such as community facilities, or support the start-up of social enterprises, including local food initiatives. Projects eligible for funding are located within the Mendip Hills National Landscape and the East Mendip area extending to Frome. Last year, the fund awarded £10,000 across nine projects, helping schools, community groups, and parish councils achieve their goals.
Jim Hardcastle, Mendip Hills National Landscape Manager, highlighted the impact of small grants, noting that they introduced new people to the area, engaged volunteers, and enabled improvements for wildlife. He also confirmed that the fund will be able to award more funding this year compared to last.
The Mendip Hills Fund is supported by donations through visitor-giving schemes, including contributions from local campsites, outdoor activity centres, and event organizers. The fund was established through a partnership between the Mendip Hills National Landscape and the Somerset Community Foundation. Applicants unsure about eligibility are encouraged to contact the Mendip Hills National Landscape Team or the Somerset Community Foundation, and applications can be submitted online anytime between 2 January and 2 March.
