The climate crisis is intensifying, and its impacts are disproportionately borne by communities in the Global South, who are the most vulnerable yet least responsible for climate change. For the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the focus is not on whether disasters will occur, but on how to help these communities recover quickly and build resilience for the future. UNDP has increasingly partnered with the insurance sector to develop innovative recovery solutions, with CelsiusPro emerging as a key collaborator in this effort.
CelsiusPro champions parametric insurance, a tool designed to provide rapid, automatic payouts based on predefined events, such as excessive rainfall or high wind speeds. Unlike traditional insurance, which requires lengthy claims processes and damage assessments, parametric insurance delivers pre-agreed funds within days of a triggering event. This speed and simplicity make it especially effective in supporting vulnerable communities in emerging markets, where timely access to resources can be the difference between recovery and further hardship.
Parametric insurance addresses three critical challenges in disaster risk reduction. First, it closes the protection gap in emerging markets by simplifying insurance delivery to regions that traditional coverage struggles to reach. Second, it fuels faster recovery and builds resilience, enabling families to repair homes, purchase food, and restart businesses immediately after a climate shock. Third, it incentivizes investment in prevention, encouraging governments, municipalities, and businesses to reduce risk through improved infrastructure, early warning systems, and climate-adaptive practices.
CelsiusPro partners with UNDP because tackling climate risk at scale requires a combination of local knowledge, global credibility, and shared vision. In the Dominican Republic, the company collaborates with UNDP and local partners to integrate parametric insurance into a social cash transfer program. This ensures that aid reaches the most vulnerable citizens promptly after hurricanes or heavy rainfall, exemplifying how insurance can act as a proactive safety net rather than just a reactive solution.
This collaboration is part of the Tripartite Programme, a joint initiative with UNDP, the German Government, and the Insurance Development Forum, involving 19 insurers, including Swiss Re, Zurich, and Europa Re. UNDP brings unmatched local and global networks, deep understanding of local contexts, and the ability to advocate for parametric insurance at the policy level, creating an enabling environment for innovative financial solutions that strengthen climate resilience.
For CelsiusPro, the initiative represents both purpose and opportunity. It aligns with Switzerland’s tradition of supporting international development while addressing a significant protection gap in emerging markets. By developing and scaling parametric insurance products, the company can help reduce poverty, build resilience, and establish new markets for sustainable insurance solutions. This demonstrates that social impact and business growth can be mutually reinforcing, advancing both global development goals and industry innovation.
