Heads of State, civil society representatives, and private sector leaders are convening this week in Doha, Qatar, for the 11th session of the UN Conference of the States Parties (COSP11) to discuss pressing issues surrounding corruption and strategies to combat it. The conference, taking place from December 15–19, is the largest international gathering dedicated to fighting corruption and economic crime. It serves as the main decision-making body of the UN Convention against Corruption, the only legally binding global anti-corruption treaty.
This year’s session, titled Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity, focuses on how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies can both challenge and support anti-corruption efforts. The conference also explores the connections between corruption, financial crime, and organized crime, alongside measures countries can implement to enhance the transparency of public financial systems and improve integrity in the private sector.
Experts highlight that technological advances create both risks and opportunities. Corrupt actors can exploit digital tools to conceal assets, forge documents, and move illicit funds across borders. At the same time, technology can be transformative in investigations, improving transparency and enforcement when applied responsibly and with respect for human rights. Officials emphasized that governments must leverage these innovations while closing loopholes that enable misuse.
COSP plays a critical role because corruption directly undermines people’s access to education, healthcare, clean water, and essential infrastructure. The conference aims to translate international commitments into concrete action by reviewing how countries implement the anti-corruption treaty and fostering cross-border cooperation. Previous COSP sessions have driven tangible reforms, including a peer review system that has helped 146 countries strengthen their anti-corruption laws and policies.
Ultimately, the conference seeks to safeguard citizens from exploitation while reinforcing shared global aspirations for integrity and accountability. By addressing corruption systematically, COSP11 aims to protect both lives and livelihoods while shaping a fairer and more transparent future.
