The Ontario government is introducing a new requirement for all school boards to establish Student and Family Support Offices to give parents and guardians a clearer and more efficient way to address concerns about their child’s education. These offices are intended to help families navigate complex or unresolved issues after initial discussions with teachers and principals. The initiative is part of a broader provincial effort to improve school board accountability and strengthen student achievement through a back-to-basics approach.
Beginning in January 2026, the first offices will open at the five school boards currently under provincial supervision, including boards in Toronto, Ottawa, Thames Valley, and Dufferin-Peel. These school boards will share more details by January 19, 2026. All remaining school boards will be required to submit plans by March 31, 2026, and have their offices operational by September 1, 2026. Each office will be led by a supervisory officer to ensure consistent oversight and responsiveness.
The new offices will handle escalated concerns from families and streamline the inquiry process by acknowledging messages within two business days and aiming to respond within five. By improving communication and resolving issues more quickly, the government hopes to make the education system more accessible, transparent, and focused on student needs.
This measure aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public confidence in Ontario’s education system. It complements significant investments in core education funding, legislative moves to reinforce school board governance, and interventions in boards facing financial mismanagement.
