The European Commission has announced an additional €9 million in humanitarian assistance to support the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), addressing the worsening humanitarian situation in the country. The announcement coincides with the participation of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, at the Paris conference dedicated to promoting peace and prosperity in the Great Lakes region.
Ongoing conflicts in eastern DRC have exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, forcing large-scale displacement and creating soaring demand for essential resources such as food, clean water, and shelter. Vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, face heightened protection risks amid deteriorating security conditions.
The new funding builds on the €120 million the EU has already allocated to the Great Lakes region in 2025, with a strong emphasis on supporting eastern DRC. The latest contribution aims to strengthen ongoing relief efforts and ensure that aid reaches the most affected communities.
Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, emphasized that the DRC crisis represents one of the world’s gravest humanitarian emergencies. She reiterated the EU’s commitment to providing immediate relief while also advocating for long-term, sustainable peace and stability for the Congolese people.
