World Cities Day, observed annually on 31 October, was established through UN General Assembly Resolution 68/239 to promote global awareness of urbanization and its challenges. The day aims to foster international cooperation in addressing urban issues and to advance sustainable urban development across the world.
The 2025 theme, “People-Centered Smart Cities,” highlights the importance of placing human needs and wellbeing at the core of urban innovation. It goes beyond technology and digital transformation to emphasize evidence-based decision-making, integrated systems, and participatory governance. The focus is on creating cities that are inclusive, resilient, and sustainable, where communities actively participate in shaping their environments.
In recognition of the occasion, the WHO South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) organized a series of webinars and collaborative activities in partnership with the Regional Laboratory on Urban Governance for Health and Wellbeing at Chulalongkorn University. Held throughout September and October 2025, these initiatives aimed to enhance city capacities in public health preparedness, climate adaptation, and recovery efforts—supporting the vision of healthier, more resilient, and inclusive urban spaces for all.
