Canada is reinforcing its commitment to equality, safety, and inclusion through a major new funding announcement. In a world facing increasing instability, the government emphasized that while global events are beyond its control, it remains dedicated to building a stronger, fairer Canada. Central to this vision is ensuring the full and equal participation of women and gender-diverse Canadians in the economy. Despite progress toward gender equality, ongoing gender-based violence and rising hate against 2SLGBTQI+ communities highlight the urgent need for sustained action.
The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, alongside the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), announced that Budget 2025 will allocate $660.5 million over five years to promote equality and inclusion nationwide. This funding will support women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people by strengthening economic opportunities, leadership roles, and protection from violence. Key areas of investment include economic and leadership programs for women, targeted support for 2SLGBTQI+ communities, and enhanced measures to address gender-based violence, particularly among Indigenous and underserved populations.
The government also reaffirmed its ongoing collaboration with provinces and territories to end gender-based violence through bilateral agreements that fund prevention initiatives and direct survivor support. Ministers highlighted that these long-term investments are not only moral imperatives but also crucial to building a stronger economy and more resilient communities.
Established in 2018, the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) has been at the forefront of advancing gender equality through major national programs. These include the Women’s Program, the 2SLGBTQI+ Community Capacity Fund, and the Gender-Based Violence Program. The new funding will provide predictable, multi-year support that enables community organizations to plan ahead, strengthen capacity, and continue creating lasting social change—ensuring that all Canadians, regardless of gender or identity, can participate fully in shaping the nation’s future.
