Africa CDC Secures Additional Mpox Vaccines from Bavarian Nordic to Strengthen Response

Dated: October 29, 2025

Africa CDC has received an additional 110,000 doses of mpox vaccines from Bavarian Nordic to strengthen the ongoing response to the mpox outbreak across Africa. The latest donation has been allocated to Uganda, one of the countries most affected in 2025, through the Mpox Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM). Coordinated by Africa CDC in partnership with global health organizations, the mechanism aims to ensure swift and equitable access to vaccines across the continent.

Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, welcomed the renewed collaboration with Bavarian Nordic, emphasizing that the donation will significantly enhance Uganda’s outbreak response and contribute to building a more resilient and self-reliant Africa in managing public health crises.

With this new support, Bavarian Nordic’s total contribution now stands at 165,000 doses of its MVA-BN vaccine. Previous allocations have aided outbreak responses through Africa CDC, the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), and Gavi-supported countries. Bavarian Nordic’s President and CEO, Paul Chaplin, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to global health, noting that continued funding and vaccine availability are crucial to effectively contain mpox’s spread across Africa.

Africa CDC, through the Mpox Access and Allocation Mechanism, continues to coordinate vaccine distribution and other countermeasures among affected Member States. This initiative aligns with the goals of the New Public Health Order for Africa, ensuring the continent’s preparedness and resilience against current and emerging health threats.
