The Ontario government is investing $43.9 million over three years to continue the province’s After School Program (ASP), which supports more than 13,000 children and youth in underserved communities annually. The funding aims to keep students active, healthy, and engaged through safe, supervised activities, tutoring, and nutritious snacks at little or no cost. This initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen communities and support families by providing accessible after-school care options that promote learning and well-being.
Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden emphasized that the government’s multi-year commitment reduces administrative burdens for partners and creates stability for program providers and families. The ASP operates in over 80 communities across Ontario, offering children from kindergarten to Grade 12 opportunities to participate in sports, arts, cultural activities, and academic support that foster personal growth and skill development.
Minister of Education Paul Calandra highlighted the program’s role in nurturing student success beyond the classroom by helping young people build confidence, stay active, and develop essential life skills. The province partners with 110 organizations, including municipalities, First Nations, and community-based non-profits such as YMCAs and Boys and Girls Clubs, to deliver the program.
Community partners welcomed the renewed investment, noting its positive impact on families and youth. BGC Hamilton-Halton described the funding as crucial for promoting physical literacy, wellness education, and positive social development. Similarly, organizations like Our Children, Our Future and BGC Peel praised the program for fostering inclusivity, improving academic performance, and helping children develop leadership and confidence in safe, supportive environments.
Launched in 2009, Ontario’s After School Program continues to serve as a cornerstone of youth development and community engagement, providing children with opportunities to grow, learn, and thrive outside regular school hours.
