On 1–2 October 2025, the WHO Regional Centre for Environmental Health Action (CEHA) hosted a strategic planning meeting in Amman, Jordan, with a delegation from Oman’s Nama Water Services (NWS) Company. This follow-up session built on the successful Water Safety Forum held in Muscat in April 2025 and aimed to strengthen collaboration on water and sanitation safety in the region. The NWS delegation included senior officials responsible for business assurance, laboratory services, and sustainability, while WHO and CEHA representatives facilitated the discussions and technical planning.
The meeting focused primarily on enhancing the use of water safety planning (WSP) to ensure safe and reliable drinking water services and introducing sanitation safety planning (SSP) to promote the safe reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture while protecting the environment. WHO emphasized integrating both approaches to safeguard public health and promote environmental sustainability.
Additional discussions addressed capacity-building and training opportunities, improving coordination among national stakeholders, and strengthening data collection and monitoring systems for safely managed drinking water and sanitation services. The importance of reporting progress to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme to support Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) was also highlighted as a key priority.
The meeting reflects WHO and CEHA’s ongoing commitment to collaborate with national partners like NWS to advance safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services. By supporting capacity development, strategic planning, and sustainable resource management, the partnership aims to protect public health and ensure long-term environmental sustainability in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
