The United Kingdom has been successfully re-elected to Part 1 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council, a position it has held since the organisation’s inception. Membership on the ICAO Council provides the UK with a key platform to advance global aviation policy, ensuring the safety, security, and sustainability of international air travel, while delivering tangible benefits for UK passengers and the aviation industry.
The UK will continue to use its position to uphold ICAO’s rules and hold accountable those who violate international aviation standards.
The UK also welcomed the ICAO Assembly’s decision to reject Russia’s candidacy for Council membership. The 193-state Assembly sent a clear signal that violations of international law preclude leadership roles within ICAO. Russia’s repeated breaches of the Chicago Convention, ICAO’s founding treaty, have threatened the safety and security of international aviation and put the lives of civilian passengers at risk.
