FEMA has announced the distribution of nearly $3.5 billion through its non-disaster grant programs to support state and local communities in enhancing emergency preparedness. These funds are aimed at strengthening capabilities to respond to threats such as fires, floods, tornadoes, cyber incidents, and terrorist attacks. The grants help communities hire and train first responders, safeguard critical infrastructure, implement public warning systems, and protect nonprofit institutions, among other measures, thereby increasing nationwide resilience.
The announcement follows a thorough review of grant programs and recipients by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FEMA, intended to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse. Grant recipients are now required to allocate funds strictly toward projects that directly enhance community preparedness, rather than unrelated initiatives.
This month’s grants include major preparedness programs such as the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, Emergency Management Grant Program, Homeland Security Grant Program, Port Security Grant Program, Transit Security Grant Program, and State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program. Additional non-disaster programs awarded funds include the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, National Urban Search and Rescue Response System, National Dam Safety Program, Next Generation Warning System, and the Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant Program.
By providing these funds, FEMA seeks to empower state and local leaders to strengthen their emergency management systems, enhance community safety, and ensure that resources are used efficiently to support preparedness and resilience across the United States.
