The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, announced funding of €157,300 for Mayo County Council to prepare a preliminary business case for improvements at Roonagh pier. This funding follows a meeting with representatives from Clare Island and Inishturk and is part of efforts to enhance access for the island communities. The need for improvements at Roonagh pier was identified as a priority in an Islands Connectivity Report commissioned by Mayo County Council with support from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.
The approved funding will allow Mayo County Council to appoint consultant engineers to develop the preliminary business case, including a Strategic Assessment, for marine infrastructure enhancements at Roonagh pier, which serves as the mainland ferry point for Clare Island and Inishturk. The project aims to ensure safe and reliable access between the islands and the mainland, which is critical for the day-to-day life and long-term sustainability of the island communities.
Minister Dara Calleary highlighted the importance of progress at Roonagh pier, noting his awareness of the urgent upgrades required at both Clare Island and Inishturk piers. He emphasized that physical connectivity through safe harbors is fundamental for island residents and impacts every aspect of island life.
