The Ontario government is preparing to launch its fall immunization programs to protect families and vulnerable populations from respiratory illnesses, including flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Residents are encouraged to receive their vaccines as soon as they become available, with a focus on high-risk and priority groups to prevent serious illness. Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones emphasized that these programs are part of a comprehensive strategy to keep communities safe and ensure vaccines are accessible close to home.
Vaccination rollout will occur in phases, starting with COVID-19 vaccines the week of September 22 and flu vaccines the week of September 29. Initial supplies will be prioritized for high-risk individuals, including hospitalized patients, hospital staff, residents and staff of long-term care homes, and people aged 65 and older. RSV vaccines will also be available for older adults and high-risk populations, while infants, young children, and pregnant women will have access to RSV immunization starting October 1. General public access to free flu and COVID-19 shots will begin on October 27 at participating pharmacies and health-care providers.
Health officials stress that vaccines remain a key tool in reducing severe illness and protecting public health during the respiratory illness season. Ontario’s routine immunization schedule ensures vaccines are provided free of charge to eligible individuals, and residents are encouraged to consult health-care providers or public health units for guidance on eligibility and vaccine status. The province’s “Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care” initiative supports timely access to care and information to help Ontarians stay healthy.
Several experts and partners highlighted the importance of these immunization programs. Ministers and health-care leaders noted that vaccines are essential for protecting seniors, long-term care residents, and other high-risk populations while reducing the strain on the health-care system. Pharmaceutical companies such as GSK, CSL Seqirus, Pfizer, Sanofi, and Moderna reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ontario’s vaccine programs and ensuring timely access to innovative immunizations. By expanding access to flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines, Ontario aims to safeguard public health, maintain community well-being, and strengthen the province’s preparedness for the upcoming respiratory illness season.
