The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine are set to launch the documentary photo exhibition “The Lights Stay On” at the European Parliament’s Info Hub from 15 to 26 September 2025. The exhibition provides a compelling visual narrative of Ukraine’s resilience during the ongoing conflict, highlighting the enduring partnership between the EU and UNDP in supporting the country’s recovery and development. Through portraits and stories of 15 Ukrainians, the exhibition captures moments of courage, perseverance, and hope amid challenging circumstances.
The official opening is scheduled for 16 September at 16:00 and will feature addresses from key figures, including Petras Auštrevičius, Member of the European Parliament; Serhiy Tereshko, Deputy Head of the Mission of Ukraine to the EU; Teresa Czerwińska, Vice President of the European Investment Bank; Elena Višnar Malinovská, Head of Unit, DG ENEST, European Commission; and Auke Lootsma, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine. Their remarks will underline the importance of international support and the ongoing efforts to bolster Ukraine’s recovery.
The exhibition’s visual concept is inspired by René Magritte’s L’état de veille (The Waking State), portraying glowing windows amid drifting clouds. In the context of Ukraine, these illuminated frames represent war-damaged buildings with shattered walls, symbolizing life and resilience continuing despite destruction.
Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, the EU and UNDP have collaborated to restore essential services and rehabilitate social infrastructure in affected communities. The photographs on display not only reflect this partnership but also highlight the strength and determination of the Ukrainian people as they navigate the challenges of conflict and reconstruction.
