Twelve community projects in North Shields have been awarded over £11,500 in small grants to celebrate the town’s 800th anniversary in creative and inclusive ways. These initiatives are part of the wider North Shields 800 celebrations, which aim to bring people together through heritage, arts, and community events that honour the town’s past, present, and future.
The grants are managed by the North Tyneside Voluntary Organisations Development Agency (VODA), with nine projects supported through community grants funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and three backed by donations from local businesses. Ranging from £500 to £1,000, the grants are helping local organisations and individuals run new activities such as exhibitions, performances, creative workshops, public artworks, and community events that explore the history of North Shields while engaging residents of all ages.
Among the projects supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund are a heritage walking trail with puzzles and stories, construction workshops celebrating the Stephenson brothers, a video project capturing local voices and memories, and a medieval banquet bringing together schoolchildren and older residents. Other initiatives include World War II-themed workshops for children, a modern play exploring social issues, storytelling and cultural workshops for ethnic minority families, a portrait gallery day by local art students, and street art workshops for young people.
Through corporate community grants, local creatives are leading projects such as public poetry displays inspired by history, textile workshops for home-educated children, and a community photography walk and exhibition celebrating the Fish Quay. Together, these efforts highlight the diversity and creativity of North Shields’ community.
Local leaders have praised the programme for its originality and inclusiveness. Sir Alan Campbell MP, Chair of the North Shields 800 Committee, noted that the projects reflect the vibrant and diverse character of the town. Keith Hardy, Deputy CEO at VODA, expressed delight at the addition of exciting community events to the anniversary programme. Helen Featherstone, Director for England, North at the National Lottery Heritage Fund, added that the scheme offers a valuable opportunity for local people to connect with the heritage that matters most to them while celebrating the town’s rich history.
