In response to the recent earthquake in north-eastern Afghanistan, the EU has committed €1 million in emergency humanitarian funding to support relief efforts. This funding, which will be channeled through existing humanitarian partners on the ground, aims to address the most urgent needs of the affected population. Additionally, the EU will donate around 130 tonnes of essential supplies from its own humanitarian stocks, including tents, clothing, and medical supplies, which are scheduled to be delivered via two EU-funded flights. The EU has also activated the Copernicus satellite service to provide emergency maps that will assist in aid delivery. This new assistance builds upon the €161 million in humanitarian aid already allocated to Afghanistan in 2025 and is part of a long-standing commitment to the country, with over €2 billion in humanitarian funding provided since 1994. The aid package is intended to provide immediate relief to an area that is already facing immense strain from an ongoing humanitarian crisis and recent large-scale repatriations from neighboring countries.
