ArtsFund and Allen Family Philanthropies have announced a $10 million funding round for 930 arts and culture organizations across Washington State through the third year of the Community Accelerator Grant program. This marks the largest group of awardees in the program’s history, with 19 percent being first-time recipients. Since its launch in 2023, the program has distributed a total of $30 million in unrestricted funding, providing organizations the flexibility to invest in their missions and strengthen their roles in local communities.
Grants range from $2,500 to $25,000, with an average award of $10,753. Approximately 74 percent of grantees report annual budgets below $500,000, highlighting the importance of low-barrier, unrestricted funding for smaller organizations. This year, funding reached organizations in all 39 counties of Washington, including 12 of the state’s 29 federally recognized tribes, and 18.5 percent of grantees were located in rural counties. Participation spanned Northwest, Southwest, Eastern, and Central regions, demonstrating broad statewide engagement.
The program prioritizes community-driven support, allowing grantees to use funding primarily for programming, salaries, labor, and facility upgrades. Case studies from previous years show the positive impact of unrestricted funding on organizational sustainability and growth. The application process was intentionally designed to be accessible and efficient, resulting in 91 percent of 2024 grantees reapplying this year.
A Community Advisory Panel of 15 members provided guidance on application design, eligibility, award distribution, and outreach strategies. Panelists emphasized equity and accessibility, ensuring funding reached historically underserved communities and minimized barriers for applicants. Applications were evaluated based on geographic distribution, alignment with program goals, and representation of priority communities.
The Community Accelerator Grant program addresses a critical gap in arts funding, as Washington State arts public spending remains 57 percent below the national average despite the creative sector contributing roughly $79 billion to the state’s GDP. Participating organizations anticipate leveraging the grants to generate an additional $2.70 for every $1 awarded, potentially creating a combined program impact of $27 million. This initiative strengthens the capacity, sustainability, and vibrancy of Washington State’s arts and culture ecosystem.
