The New Zealand government has introduced a $3 million Youth Development Partnership and Innovation Fund aimed at improving outcomes for at-risk young people aged 12 to 24. Announced by Minister for Youth James Meager on International Youth Day, this fund offers matched funding to businesses, iwi, charities, NGOs, and philanthropic organizations to deliver early intervention and youth development programs focused on measurable results.
The fund prioritizes initiatives that support key government goals, such as reducing the number of young people receiving Jobseeker Support Benefits, increasing student attendance rates, and providing support to young parents during the critical first 2,000 days of their children’s lives. Minister Meager emphasized the importance of shifting the focus from simply contracting outputs to delivering tangible outcomes that directly benefit young people.
By co-investing through matched funding, the government aims to maximize taxpayer value while empowering communities to design and deliver programs tailored to local needs. These evidence-based programs may include leadership training, mentoring, informal qualifications, and volunteering opportunities designed to build skills and enhance employment prospects for youth.
