The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €45 million green loan to BrianzAcque, the publicly owned water utility for Italy’s Monza and Brianza province, to support its 2025–2029 investment plan. This funding, backed by the European Union’s InvestEU programme, aims to significantly improve the efficiency, sustainability, and climate resilience of the region’s water and sewerage infrastructure. The initiative will benefit approximately 877,000 residents in Lombardy.
Structured as a green loan, the financing will support measures to enhance water service quality, prevent flooding, and protect infrastructure from the effects of extreme weather events. The project includes expanding the capacity of water treatment plants, constructing 16 kilometers of new sewer pipes, separating rainwater from the sewer system, building retention basins for temporary rainwater collection, and implementing innovative urban regeneration strategies. The project is expected to create around 50 new jobs during its implementation phase.
EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti emphasized the importance of modernizing water infrastructure to combat climate change and reduce water loss. BrianzAcque CEO Enrico Boerci welcomed the funding, noting it as a vote of confidence in the company’s sustainable and future-oriented approach. He highlighted the value of public collaboration and long-term planning in delivering high-quality services.
This latest loan strengthens a longstanding partnership between the EIB and BrianzAcque, following earlier financing agreements in 2017 and 2021. It further consolidates the EIB’s role as a key partner in promoting sustainable development across Italian regions.
The EIB, as the European Union’s long-term lending institution, is committed to supporting projects aligned with EU policy goals, including environmental sustainability, innovation, and social cohesion. Over the past five years, the EIB Group has provided more than €58 billion for projects in Italy, with a major share directed toward climate action and environmentally sustainable investments, in line with the Paris Agreement.
The InvestEU programme plays a critical role in mobilizing long-term funding across the EU by combining public and private investment. It simplifies and streamlines access to EU-backed financial instruments and aims to support strategic goals like the European Green Deal and digital transformation. With a €26.2 billion budget guarantee, InvestEU seeks to mobilize at least €372 billion in additional investment across Europe through its fund, advisory hub, and portal.
BrianzAcque, established in 2003, manages the integrated water service across Monza and Brianza, supplying over 75 million cubic meters of water annually. Owned in part by 55 local municipalities, the company oversees the full water cycle—from supply and sewerage to treatment—through continuous modernization and innovation. With a strong focus on sustainability and advanced technologies, BrianzAcque contributes to community well-being and environmental responsibility.
