The Dutch Research Council (NWO) is organizing a sandpit workshop from August 25 to 29, 2025, as part of the NWA-Call titled “Slavery pasts: (understudied forms of) impacts and perspectives.” This workshop offers an intensive, collaborative environment designed to foster co-creation, with strong emphasis on inclusion and equality among participants. Special attention will be given to ensuring accessibility for individuals less experienced with Dutch research funding procedures.
The initiative seeks to deepen understanding of how the Dutch colonial and slavery past continues to shape contemporary society, both within the Netherlands and in formerly colonized regions around the world. It aims to address the enduring effects of this history, providing a foundation for enhancing scientific approaches, informing social and political discussions, developing effective policies, and mitigating ongoing negative consequences.
Through this call for proposals, the program will support the development of new knowledge regarding the long-term impact of slavery and colonialism. A total of €2.75 million in funding is available, with the expectation that only one application will be selected for award under this call.
