A coalition in Louisville has announced the allocation of significant funding aimed at addressing the growing crisis of family homelessness in the city. The funds will be used to support a range of services including rapid rehousing, expansion of family shelters, transitional housing, case management, and assistance with housing barriers for unhoused families.
Due to prolonged overcapacity in local family shelters, many families have been forced to seek shelter in unsafe environments. In response, the coalition developed a comprehensive funding strategy following a $5 million grant awarded by the Day 1 Families Fund in November 2024. This included hiring a family homelessness resource manager, gathering feedback from affected families, and conducting a grant application and allocation process.
The funding will be distributed among several organizations working directly with homeless families. These include Catholic Charities, Louisville Outreach for the Unsheltered, Mama to Mama, Metro Office of Social Services, Option to Success, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, UP for Women & Children, Volunteers of America, and Wayside Christian Mission. These agencies will use the funds to expand services and improve support systems for families experiencing homelessness in Louisville.
