India Unveils Array of Fellowships, Research Grants, and Faculty Development Programs

Dated: June 3, 2025

A wave of opportunities has opened for academics, researchers, and professionals in India, with various Indian organizations and international programs announcing calls for applications. These initiatives span fellowships, research grants, and faculty development programs, aiming to foster innovation, enhance academic capabilities, and promote international collaboration across diverse fields.

Key Takeaways

  • Diverse opportunities for fellowships, research, and faculty development are now open.
  • Calls are extended to early career scholars, senior scientists, practitioners, and academic institutions.
  • Focus areas include urban studies, biotechnology, public health, and international academic partnerships.
  • Application deadlines range from late 2024 to mid-2025, providing ample time for prospective applicants.

Expanding Horizons: Fellowships and Research Opportunities

Several prestigious organizations are inviting applications for fellowships and research grants. The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) has announced the third round of its Writing Urban India Fellowship (WUI 3.0). This 10-month program is designed to mentor early career scholars, PhD candidates, and urban practitioners in academic writing and publishing on urbanization in India. The application deadline for this unique writing fellowship is December 25, 2024.

For senior researchers, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is accepting applications for its Emeritus Scientist Program 2025, providing a platform for distinguished scientists to continue their research contributions. Interested candidates should note the application deadline of February 17, 2025.

In the realm of biotechnology, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has issued calls for proposals. These include a joint call with BIRAC for proposals on ‘Functional Foods’ under the BioE3 Policy, with applications open from June 3 to July 10, 2025. Another joint call with BIRAC, ‘Bioenablers: Biofoundries and Biomanufacturing hubs’, is open from May 14 to June 30, 2025, supporting high-performance biomanufacturing.

Fostering Academic and Professional Growth

Beyond direct research, opportunities for faculty development and professional roles are also available. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is inviting applications to host Faculty Development Programmes (FDP) focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, aiming to enhance teaching and research capabilities across institutions.

NLSIU is also seeking an Assistant Editor for its Publications, a full-time, one-year extendable position. This role involves assisting with the production of academic journals and scholarly publications, requiring strong editorial skills and experience in the publishing industry. The deadline for applications is June 10, 2025.

International Collaborations and Institutional Development

Highlighting the breadth of international collaboration, the recent UTFORSK 2024 call from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills offered significant funding for educational partnerships. This program supported collaborations between higher education institutions in Norway and several partner countries, including India, aiming to strengthen institutional ties, promote student mobility, and integrate education with research and industry. While the application period for 2024 has concluded, it exemplifies the ongoing commitment to fostering global academic exchange.

Additionally, the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has been instrumental in facilitating international research, including the India Science and Research Fellowship (ISRF) and the ASEAN-India Research Training Fellowship, alongside joint calls like the INDIA-SPAIN Joint Call for R&D&I Projects, underscoring India’s growing role in global scientific and academic networks.
