The government has approved the Tillbridge Solar Farm in Lincolnshire, marking the 17th nationally significant clean energy project sanctioned since July 2024. Once operational, the project will generate enough clean energy to power over 7.5 million homes, significantly boosting the country’s energy security and contributing to its goal of becoming a clean energy superpower.
The solar farm is expected to support approximately 1,250 jobs, providing employment opportunities for the local community while delivering hundreds of thousands of homes with affordable, renewable electricity. Solar energy, currently the cheapest form of power available, is central to the government’s strategy to reduce energy bills and reliance on volatile global gas markets. Families installing rooftop solar panels could save around £500 annually, further enhancing household financial resilience.
In addition to energy generation, the government is consulting on mandatory community benefits for areas hosting ground-mounted solar projects. For Tillbridge Solar Farm, developers have pledged to ensure that nearby communities directly benefit through local initiatives such as educational programs, sports facilities, and improved transport infrastructure.
The project comes at a time when families and businesses continue to feel the impact of high gas prices, exacerbated by global events. Energy Minister Michael Shanks emphasized that expanding solar power is a quick and cost-effective way to deliver clean energy, create jobs, and provide long-term protection against future energy price shocks.
