The Nordic countries have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to gender equality and equal rights for LGBTI people by announcing the creation of a global coalition to promote these values worldwide. The decision came as the Nordic ministers for gender equality and LGBTI issues met in Hämeenlinna, Finland, on 7 October 2025, to address mounting global challenges threatening human rights progress.
At a time when gender equality and LGBTI rights are increasingly under political pressure—and in some parts of the world, even regressing—the Nordic governments are determined to stand united and defend these fundamental values. The ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation among Nordic embassies, enabling them to take a more active role in advancing women’s rights, promoting equal treatment, and combating discrimination internationally.
“Even though we’re seeing a number of worrying trends in the world today, the Nordic countries will continue to fight for gender equality and equal rights. These are fundamental human rights principles, and we stand firmly by them,” said Sanni Grahn-Laasonen, Finland’s Minister of Social Security.
She added that under Finland’s and Åland’s joint presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, several initiatives have already been launched to reinforce the Nordic voice for progress, and those efforts will continue to expand through this new coalition.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of international partnerships. Michael O’Flaherty, the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, attended the session and highlighted the growing challenges across Europe regarding weakened support for core human rights principles. In response, the ministers announced that in 2026, the Nordic Council of Ministers, in cooperation with the Council of Europe, will host the annual European Conference on Equal Rights for LGBTI People.
“The Nordic countries have worked together on gender equality for 50 years, and since 2020, our cooperation has expanded to include equal rights for LGBTI people. These are core Nordic values, and that’s why unity is more crucial than ever in these challenging times,” said Arsim Zekaj, Åland’s Minister of Social Affairs and Health.
Under Finland’s and Åland’s 2025 presidency, the Nordic Council of Ministers for Gender Equality and LGBTI has also introduced several targeted initiatives. These include efforts to prevent gender-based violence, promote equal pay, strengthen research on LGBTI health and well-being, and address the challenges men face in achieving gender equality.
Through the formation of this global coalition, the Nordic region aims to send a clear and united message: there will be no turning back on the fight for equality, dignity, and human rights for all.
