Trade‑Mark Industrial Inc., a Cambridge-based contractor providing millwrighting, rigging, electrical, piping, sheet metal, and HVAC services, has been fined $80,000 following a workplace injury at Gerdau Ameristeel Corporation in Whitby, Ontario.
On May 10, 2023, a worker was injured when a section of pipe fell during furnace installation because a temporary structure was not properly braced, and incorrect bolts were used despite the worker’s warning. The company failed to ensure stability measures as required under Ontario Regulation 213/91 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Following a guilty plea in Whitby’s Provincial Offences Court on March 3, 2026, Justice of the Peace Louis Bourgon imposed the fine along with a 25 per cent victim surcharge, which supports provincial victims of crime.
The incident occurred during maintenance work when a pipe connection failed after supervisors instructed a crew to reposition pipe skids, highlighting lapses in workplace safety and compliance.
