The Ontario government has introduced the Building Homes and Improving Transportation Infrastructure Act to accelerate housing construction, streamline approvals, and enhance transportation across the province. The proposed legislation aims to reduce gridlock, improve public transit, and make homebuilding faster and more affordable by simplifying site plan rules, standardizing municipal official plans, and clarifying development charges. It also expands rideshare services along the Northlander corridor, allows single-occupant vehicles to use HOV lanes during off-peak hours, and supports safer commercial driver licensing.
The Act includes measures to increase transparency for homebuyers by disclosing municipal fees and removing development charges for non-profit retirement homes, while enabling housing expansion in remote and rural areas through communal water and wastewater systems. It reinforces public ownership of water and wastewater infrastructure in Peel Region and builds on prior legislation to protect Ontario’s economy, reduce costs, and ensure timely delivery of essential housing and transportation projects.
The initiative has been widely supported by industry and municipal leaders for cutting red tape, improving predictability in approvals, expanding infrastructure, and creating more affordable housing options. By enhancing efficiency in planning and construction, the legislation is designed to support economic growth, keep Ontarians employed, and improve quality of life across communities.
