Finland has announced a new humanitarian contribution of €2 million to support refugees and internally displaced people in Lebanon through the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). This funding comes at a time when the humanitarian situation in Lebanon is rapidly deteriorating due to escalating hostilities in the region, which have forced large numbers of people to flee their homes within a short period.
The scale of displacement in Lebanon has reached alarming levels, with over one million people internally displaced in a country of approximately 5.8 million residents. As military actions continue, the number of affected individuals is expected to rise further, placing immense pressure on already strained humanitarian systems and resources.
The financial support from Finland will help UNHCR deliver critical assistance to vulnerable populations, including families with children and persons with disabilities. Key areas of support include the provision of shelter, essential supplies, and basic services aimed at ensuring safety and dignity for those impacted by the crisis.
This latest contribution is part of Finland’s broader humanitarian engagement in the region. Earlier in 2026, Finland allocated approximately €19 million in flexible and targeted funding to organizations responding to crises in Lebanon and other affected areas. These efforts reflect a continued commitment to addressing urgent humanitarian needs through coordinated international action.
In addition to direct funding to UNHCR, Finland is also supporting multilateral humanitarian mechanisms such as the UN Central Emergency Response Fund and the Disaster Response Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. These mechanisms have collectively directed significant resources toward relief operations in Lebanon.
Overall, Finland’s contributions aim to strengthen the humanitarian response in Lebanon by supporting key international organizations working on the ground. As the crisis evolves, such funding plays a vital role in ensuring that displaced populations receive timely assistance and protection in increasingly challenging conditions.
