The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved a €40 million loan to Montenegro to strengthen solid waste management, improve community living conditions, and support a cleaner, more attractive business environment. The Montenegro Waste Management Reform Project aims to modernize waste services, enhance institutional capacity, and align the sector with European Union standards, focusing on selected municipalities and national-level capacity building.
The project includes key infrastructure and remediation investments, such as the construction of a Regional Waste Management Center in Nikšić, which will serve over 75,000 people. The facility will support recycling, composting, and modern waste treatment, reducing reliance on landfilling and promoting higher recycling rates in line with EU requirements. Additionally, the project will remediate approximately 11 hectares of contaminated land at the former KAP industrial site in the Zeta Valley, mitigating public health risks and protecting groundwater and the Skadar Lake basin.
Christopher Sheldon, World Bank Country Manager for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, highlighted that the initiative strengthens institutions while investing in modern infrastructure, supporting sustainable growth and closer alignment with EU standards. Project preparation was supported by a grant from the Grant Facility for Preparing Projects Trust Fund.
