A new project funded by the Republic of Korea and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will provide humanitarian assistance to over 6,000 migrants and members of border communities in Ecuador. The initiative targets vulnerable populations transiting key border crossings with Peru and Colombia, aiming to expand access to essential services and strengthen protection for people on the move.
According to IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), around 550 vulnerable migrants pass daily through the border points of Huaquillas, Lago Agrio, and Tulcán, many of whom face critical barriers to safe water, food, shelter, healthcare, and legal assistance. The project seeks to address these urgent needs while supporting safe, orderly, and regular migration in line with national frameworks.
The project will provide temporary shelter, food, primary health care, mental health and psychosocial support, and distribute maternity, hygiene, and baby kits. Legal orientation services and protection case management will also be offered, ensuring a comprehensive humanitarian response tailored to vulnerable migrants and their families.
In addition to direct support for migrants, the project will strengthen local capacities and facilities in border communities, helping shelters and safe spaces better serve both migrants and host populations. Data collection through the DTM will inform authorities and support evidence-based public policies. Participation of host communities will promote social cohesion, prevent xenophobia, and ensure that humanitarian assistance is inclusive and aligned with local priorities.
The initiative is part of the Republic of Korea’s broader support for Ecuador, including its ‘Action with Women and Peace Initiative’ that addresses gender-based violence, livelihoods, and capacity building for refugee women. The project reflects ongoing Korean humanitarian assistance to Ecuador, particularly in response to Venezuelan refugee and migrant flows, and underscores the commitment to promoting integration, protection, and resilience for migrants and host communities.
