Front of Yonge Township Receives Ontario Disaster Relief Funding

Dated: March 30, 2026

The Ontario government is providing the Township of Front of Yonge with up to $51,000 to cover emergency response and cleanup costs following a severe windstorm in June 2025. This support comes through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program, which helps municipalities restore essential services, protect communities, and maintain public safety after natural disasters.

On June 21, 2025, the township experienced downburst winds that caused widespread damage, including downed trees on roads, trails, and parks, creating hazards and blocking access to critical services. The MDRA funding will assist the municipality in managing the unexpected costs of debris removal, waste disposal, and emergency response efforts.

Ontario officials emphasized the government’s commitment to helping municipalities recover from unforeseen disasters. The funding ensures that local governments are not solely responsible for the financial burden of emergency response and infrastructure repair, including roads, bridges, and other essential property.

Eligible MDRA expenses include operating and capital costs beyond the regular municipal budget, provided they are directly related to the disaster and exceed a threshold of three percent of the municipality’s own-purpose taxation levy. Township officials expressed gratitude for the support, noting that it helps mitigate the financial impact of sudden and severe weather events on local resources.
