The UNODC Youth Forum 2026, held from March 9-11 on the sidelines of the 69th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna, Austria, brought together 26 youth leaders from 21 countries. For nearly 15 years, the forum has aimed to create a space for active youth leaders to learn about evidence-based drug prevention, collaborate, and share their experiences. During the opening ceremony, Ms. Candice Welsh, Director of the Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs at UNODC, emphasized the significant potential of youth engagement in shaping effective drug prevention strategies.
Over the course of the three-day event, participants engaged in interactive sessions that focused on the effectiveness of evidence-based prevention based on the UNODC/WHO International Standards on Drug Use Prevention. They explored the science behind drug use disorders and learned about the social, environmental, and individual factors contributing to vulnerability. These discussions highlighted the importance of comprehensive prevention efforts that address the broader contexts in which young people live.
In addition to the core sessions, youth participants attended several side events, gaining exposure to critical issues such as synthetic substances, the non-medical use of medications among adolescents, and innovative digital approaches to youth engagement for prevention. These sessions allowed them to gain insights into current global debates and public health perspectives.
The forum culminated in the creation of a Youth Statement, which was presented at the CND Plenary. The statement stressed that preventing substance use begins with fostering supportive environments for children and adolescents, using science-driven approaches tailored to their realities. It called for meaningful collaboration with young people to create prevention efforts that are both effective and relatable. The participants emphasized that protecting youth potential starts with early intervention and prevention, and that youth should play a central role in shaping policies.
UNODC praised the dedication of the participants and highlighted the critical role of young people in shaping drug prevention strategies. Through the Youth Initiative and the growing alumni network, UNODC continues to support young leaders in their efforts to drive positive change in their communities. The forum serves as a reminder that empowering youth through prevention strategies is vital to building healthier and safer futures.
