The Government of Ontario is providing the Town of Gravenhurst with up to $780,000 to help cover emergency response and cleanup costs following extreme snowfall in November 2024. The financial assistance is being delivered through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance Program, which supports municipalities facing unexpected natural disasters. The funding forms part of the province’s broader efforts to protect communities by helping repair critical infrastructure and ensuring public safety while maintaining economic stability.
Provincial officials stated that the assistance is intended to help communities recover from severe weather events that place unexpected financial pressure on municipal governments. The support will help Gravenhurst carry out repairs to roads and important public facilities, allowing the community to restore services, keep residents safe, and support local economic activity during the recovery process.
The extreme snowfall event occurred on November 29, 2024, when Gravenhurst experienced unusually heavy snow across the municipality. Local authorities had to mobilize extensive resources to clear roads, respond to emergencies, and ensure the safety of residents. The provincial funding will help offset the significant and extraordinary costs incurred during these emergency operations and the subsequent cleanup efforts.
The Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance Program provides financial relief to municipalities for extraordinary emergency response and recovery costs resulting from natural disasters. Through this program, funding can be used to repair essential public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and other municipal assets that are critical to the functioning of the community.
During the November 2024 storm, weather estimates from Environment Canada and local stations indicated that between 120 and 180 centimeters of snow fell in Gravenhurst and nearby areas within a short time. The heavy snowfall led to road closures and widespread power outages, leaving some residents stranded in vehicles and homes across the municipality. Under the program, municipalities may receive assistance if disaster-related expenses exceed a set threshold relative to their municipal tax revenues. Local officials welcomed the funding, noting that it will significantly reduce the financial burden on the municipality and support the community’s recovery efforts.
