Member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have agreed that El Salvador will host the 40th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (LARC40) in 2028. The decision was announced during the 39th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (LARC39), which gathered ministerial delegations and government representatives in Brasília to discuss key challenges and opportunities related to transforming agrifood systems across the region.
During the announcement, El Salvador’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adriana Mira, highlighted the region’s strong potential to contribute significantly to global food security. She emphasized that this potential can only be realized through stronger productive systems supported by strategic planning, effective cooperation, and stable environments that encourage investment and boost agricultural production.
Mira also stated that El Salvador is prepared to contribute through its experience and ongoing progress while strengthening partnerships with other countries and deepening cooperation with FAO. The country aims to play an active role in advancing a transformative regional agenda for agrifood systems.
FAO Regional Conferences serve as the organization’s main governance platform at the regional level. These meetings allow Member States to review major challenges affecting agrifood systems, exchange experiences, and establish priorities that will guide FAO’s work in the region during the upcoming biennial period.
