FRRR, in partnership with insurer Suncorp, is offering $600,000 in funding through the Rebuilding Futures program to support community disaster recovery and preparedness projects. The grants target medium to long-term initiatives in communities affected by disasters between January 2019 and December 2025, aiming to rebuild wellbeing, restore infrastructure, and strengthen resilience against future disaster risks. Eligible not-for-profit groups can apply for grants of up to $25,000 in two funding streams: Disaster Resilient Communities, for remote, rural, or regional communities impacted by any government-declared disaster during the specified period, and Disaster Recovery Support, specifically for Queensland communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Alfred or the Western Queensland Trough in 2025.
All projects must either assist communities in recovering from a disaster or enhance preparedness for future events. Applications are required to address at least one of seven critical dimensions of community resilience identified by FRRR and the University of Sydney: Inclusion, Networks, Communication, Information, Self-Organising Systems, Local Decision Making, or Resources. Projects may include rebuilding community assets, addressing social issues related to disasters, or implementing learnings to strengthen future preparedness.
FRRR Program Manager Danielle Griffin highlighted the program’s flexibility, noting that each community’s recovery and preparedness needs are unique. She emphasized the importance of locally-informed projects that provide practical resources, social connection, improved infrastructure, and stronger systems to help communities rebuild better and more resiliently. Suncorp’s Chief Executive Consumer Insurance, Lisa Harrison, reinforced the partnership’s focus on supporting grassroots groups that understand local needs and can deliver the greatest impact.
Applications for the Rebuilding Futures grants close on Thursday, 16 April at 5pm AEST, with funding awarded in June 2026.
