The Government of Canada has announced new efforts to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services and resources across the country. The initiative aims to ensure that Canadians can access safe, accurate, and stigma-free care, particularly for people who often face barriers in the healthcare system. These barriers are commonly experienced by marginalized groups, newcomers to Canada, members of 2SLGBTQI+ communities, Indigenous and racialized populations, women, and youth.
During an event in Edmonton, Senator Dr. Kristopher Wells, on behalf of Health Minister Marjorie Michel, announced an investment of nearly $600,000 to support inclusive and culturally sensitive sexual and reproductive health services. The announcement took place at the Positive Light Gala, an event dedicated to promoting a more inclusive society and supporting people living with HIV.
Part of the funding will support the Association for New Canadians, which will receive $210,000 to strengthen sexual and reproductive health services for women, youth, and LGBTQI+ newcomers in Newfoundland and Labrador. The organization will develop an online cloud-based portal designed to address language barriers, cultural sensitivities, and gaps in access to information and services.
Another portion of the funding will go to the Canadian Black, African and Caribbean HIV/AIDS Network, which will receive more than $375,000. The project will engage African, Caribbean, and Black youth, along with parents and community leaders, to create comprehensive sexual and reproductive health learning resources. These materials will focus on anti-racism, inclusive practices, and cultural competency and will be used by healthcare providers working with these communities.
The projects are funded through the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund, a federal initiative that supports community-based organizations working to make sexual and reproductive health services more accessible. The program focuses on developing evidence-based and innovative solutions for populations that face a higher risk of poor sexual and reproductive health outcomes.
Since 2021, the Government of Canada has invested $87 million through the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund to support 42 projects across the country. These initiatives aim to improve access to culturally relevant services and strengthen health equity for underserved communities.
