The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan, together with various non-governmental organizations, launched a series of gender equality events in New York to coincide with the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Taiwan Gender Equality Week (TGEW) officially kicked off in Times Square on International Women’s Day, one day before the start of CSW70, which runs through next Thursday.
Lee Chih-chiang, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, explained that TGEW aims to showcase Taiwan’s achievements in women’s empowerment and gender equality. Although Taiwan cannot formally attend the UN meeting, the events are designed to raise international awareness about the nation’s progress in advancing gender equality.
The week’s highlights include “Taiwan Cultural Night,” featuring remarks from invited guests and a performance by a Taiwanese jazz singer. More than 30 non-governmental forums will be held, bringing together representatives from over 30 NGOs and government agencies to share Taiwan’s gender equality initiatives and collaborate with international partners. Deputy Director Kang Chia-chi invited global participants to register for these forums, emphasizing the active role of Taiwan’s NGOs in advancing gender justice alongside government efforts.
The TGEW is organized in partnership with Taiwan-based groups, including the Alliance for Women’s Rights and Sustainable Development and the Taiwan Equality Campaign. To promote the event, Taiwan’s representative office in New York has launched an ad campaign featuring animated displays on yellow taxis and billboards at bus shelters, subway stations, and major tourist sites, carrying messages such as “Her rights, Our pride” and “Taiwan, Empowering Women,” running until March 22 and through the conclusion of the UN session.
