The Lydia Wilson Foundation has launched the Bake to Empower programme to train 999 displaced women and children in Northern Nigeria in baking skills, providing them with the tools and knowledge to generate sustainable income and reduce dependence on aid. The initiative addresses structural barriers that perpetuate cycles of poverty and food insecurity, particularly as nearly 35 million Nigerians are projected to face severe hunger during the 2026 lean season.
Participants will receive practical training, starter equipment, ingredients, and guidance on hygiene, food safety, pricing, and selling, enabling them to operate as micro-entrepreneurs. The programme targets conflict-affected rural areas, where violence and displacement have disrupted livelihoods and access to essential services, offering a pathway to independence while supporting broader goals of poverty reduction, gender equity, and economic empowerment.
