The World Bank-financed Somalia – Horn of Africa Infrastructure Integration Project (SHIIP) is part of a broader programme aimed at fostering economic development and structural transformation in the Horn of Africa by enhancing regional integration. The initiative focuses on strengthening Somalia’s connectivity through strategic transport infrastructure, which is expected to facilitate trade, tourism, and investment, while reinforcing Mogadishu’s role as a key commercial hub in the region.
UNOPS is providing technical assistance to the Somali government across multiple areas, including feasibility studies, environmental and social impact assessments, and the development of master plans and engineering designs for economic corridors and the new Mogadishu International Airport. These efforts aim to ensure that infrastructure projects are well-planned, sustainable, and aligned with long-term economic goals.
The project has officially begun with a kick-off meeting led by Somalia’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, marking the start of preparatory work for the Mogadishu International Airport, including master planning and feasibility studies. This new airport is being developed to meet growing passenger and cargo demands and to support the country’s broader economic growth.
Ala Arman, UNOPS Head of Programme in Somalia, emphasized that the feasibility study is a critical first step, providing the government with evidence-based technical, environmental, and social analysis to guide future investment and development. Omar Ali Afrah, Somalia’s Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, highlighted that the project aligns with the government’s development priorities and its commitment to building resilient infrastructure and strong institutions.
